FY 2024 Educational Facilities Master Plan

Wicomico County Public Schools | EFMP FY2024 INITIATIVES Projects that may not be identified by either the enrollment or facility needs analyses but shall be considered important during the prioritization of capital funding. Pre-K for All / Blueprint Implementation Study the elementary capacity impact of implementing the Pre-K for all initiative and add new capacity as determined necessary. Explore necessary space needs to support Blueprint including shifts in teacher/leader responsibilities, need for educator training and professional development, CTE and college-and career-ready (CCR) program expansion, and increased students supports and resources. Transitional Pre-K and K Study the space needs for a transitional Pre-K and Kindergarten initiative and investigate the feasibility of repourposing Wicomico Early Learning Center for this use. WCPS County Stadium Although not a building by definition, the WCPS county stadium is treated as a separate facility to track the necessary on-going operations and maintenance of this critical athletic component. The county stadium is shared by all WCPS schools for several of their competition sport venues including soccer, lacrosse, football and track and receives an immense amount of use throughout the entire year. The track was recently resurfaced and bleachers replaced. The stadium score board is reaching the end of its useful life and need replacement to complete this facility upgrade. Portables Portables, whether used as classrooms or program support, are often used throughout our schools to deal with critical space needs. This is done as a short termmeasure until a more permanent structure can be funded and constructed but they often become a long term fix. During the 2021/22 school year, WCPS was operating and maintaining eighty-nine (89) portables at various schools throughout the county. Fifty-seven (57) units are located on elementary school sites, eleven (11) are at middle schools and twenty-one (21) are being used at the high school level. Our records indicate that more than 75% of the rooms within the 89 portables are being used as additional classroom space. The others are used to make up for instructional pull-out space that older schools lack. In total, these units represent over 60,000 square feet which for comparison purposes, is approximately the size of one of our smaller elementary schools. Many of the units are old requiring continued service and resources much like an actual school building. WCPS has tried to reduce its overall inventory of aged portables by addressing the improvements and repairs required. Portables (for better or worse) have come to play a vital role in our ability to provide adequate space for the classroom and program support needs of our schools. It has become crucial that we maintain and service these units on a regular basis. Alternative Education Program / Choices Study the options for a permanent building for the Choices Academy program. 136
