Purpose 2 It is the policy of the Wicomico County Board of Education (WCBOE) to provide a safe, efficient, 3 and economical method of transporting students to and from school. WCBOE will furnish school 4 vehicle transportation to all elementary and secondary school pupils who are eligible as established 5 by WCBOE and in accordance with Maryland State Board of Education, COMAR 13A.06.07, and 6 applicable Maryland vehicle laws pursuant to procedures established by the Superintendent of 7 Schools. 8 9 II. Definitions 10 A. “Administrator” for the purpose of this policy means principal or assistant principal. 11 B. “Student Transporter” means a Wicomico County Public School (WCPS) employee, 12 authorized by the Superintendent of Schools, or designee, to transport students. 13 14 III. Policy Statement 15 A. WCPS employees, other than those designated as approved student transporters, are not 16 covered through WCBOE insurance provisions and are prohibited from transporting students to 17 or from school or to or from a school event. 18 B. WCPS Administrators are prohibited from transporting students to or from school or to or from 19 a school event unless there is a risk of harm to the student’s health or safety in the event such 20 transportation is not provided. 21 C. WCPS employees, including teachers, administrators, coaches, and others, are not permitted to 22 make provisions for transportation through services including but not limited to ride-share 23 services, taxi services, etc. 24 D. In the event that a student remains at school or at a school event without transportation, the 25 staff member having supervisory responsibilities for the event is required to contact their 26 administrator who will communicate with the appropriate Student and Family Services staff to 27 receive direction for further action regarding the transport of the student. 28 E.
