Purpose The purpose of this procedure is to establish standards by which students are assigned school of attendance. II. Definitions For the purpose of this procedure, the following definitions apply: A. “Legal Guardian” means the person(s) having custodial care of a minor child (either natural parent(s) or person(s) having the appropriate legal documentation). B. “Attendance Area” means the geographic area approved by the Wicomico County Board of Education to provide sufficient and appropriate enrollment for each individual school operation. C. “Special Permission” means the process of a legal guardian requesting permission and receiving approval for the student to attend a school other than the one is the attendance area of the attendance area associated with the residency of the legal guardian and student. III. Procedure A. To assure balanced use of schools, students will be required to attend the school in the attendance area in which they reside unless special permission is granted. B. If a legal guardian wants the student to attend a school outside his/her attendance area, a current Request for Permission to Attend a School Outside Student’s Attendance Area form must be completed and submitted to the school in which attendance is requested. C. The request will be reviewed and the student and parent(s) or legal guardian(s) must meet the criteria and follow the steps as outlined in the Special Permission to Attend School Outside of the Attendance Area Procedure, INS-SCH-PR-003, in order to be considered for approval.
