Purpose 5 This procedure aims to define the process by which students can be assigned to a school outside their 6 respective attendance area. It covers parent requests, the administrative process, and the stipulations 7 by which students may attend a school other than the one within their attendance area. 8 9 II. Procedural Statement 10 The Wicomico County Board of Education (the “Board”) requires students to attend the school 11 within their respective attendance area for instructional continuity, social stability, and geographic 12 accessibility. At the same time, the Board understands that there may be circumstances by which a 13 parent/guardian may request their child to attend a school outside of their assigned attendance 14 area. This procedure outlines the circumstances and the conditions by which permission to attend 15 school outside the assigned attendance area may be considered. 16 17 III. Procedure 18 A. Initial Enrollment 19 1. Parents must enroll their child(ren) in the school of their assigned attendance area prior to 20 requesting special permission to attend a school outside their attendance area. 21 2. Once initial enrollment is complete, the parent may submit the Request for Permission to 22 Attend a School Outside Student’s Attendance Area form, available at all school offices. The 23 form is to be submitted to the principal of the requested school or their designee. The school 24 principal, or designee, will make the final decision as to whether special permission to attend 25 the requested school is granted. 26 a. Reasons for special permission include: 27 i. Change of residence after the start of the school year (documentation required) 28 ii. Home under construction with occupancy date after the start of the school year 29 (documentation required). 30 iii. Continuation in current school (may be approved for a student who wishes to remain 31 at their current school, regardless of grade level or attendance area, provided the 32 student is in good standing, and the school has capacity.). 33 iv. Sport not offered in home school (high school only) or signature program (middle 34 school only) - May be approved for a student who desires to participate in a high 35 school interscholastic sport or signature program not offered at the school the student 36 is required to attend.
