Wicomico County Public Schools | EFMP FY2027 • Capacity During the 2025/26 school year, enrollments significantly declined. Enrollment trends should be investigated to consider retirement of a school facility. In contrast, during the 2024/25 school year, WCPS experienced significant enrollment growth, most notably at the elementary level within the metro core. Capacity needs to be investigated and a plan should be implemented. Capacity, both over and under, will be closely monitored to see if a trend develops in future years. • WCPS County Stadium Although not a building by definition, the WCPS county stadium is treated as a separate facility to track the necessary on-going operations and maintenance of this critical athletic component. The county stadium is shared by all WCPS schools for several of their competition sport venues including soccer, lacrosse, football and track and receives an immense amount of use throughout the entire year. The track was recently resurfaced and bleachers replaced. The stadium score board was also recently replaced. • Relocatables Relocatables, whether used as classrooms or program support, are often used throughout our schools to deal with critical space needs. This is done as a short term measure until a more permanent structure can be funded and constructed but they often become a long term fix. During the 2025/26 school year, WCPS was operating and maintaining one hundred and forty-five (145) classrooms in relocatable buildings at various schools throughout the county. Seventy-nine (79) classrooms are located on elementary school sites, nine (9) are at middle schools and fifty-seven (57) are being used at the high school level. Our records indicate that more than 90% of the 145 classrooms in relocatables are being used as additional classroom space. The others are used to make up for instructional pull-out space that older schools lack or to support special programs. In total, these units represent over 100,000 square feet which for comparison purposes, is approximately the size of the two most recently designed elementary schools. Many of the units are old requiring continued service and resources much like an actual school building. WCPS has tried to reduce its overall inventory of aged relocatables by addressing the improvements and repairs required. Relocatables (for better or worse) have come to play a vital role in our ability to provide adequate space for the classroom and program support needs of our schools. It has become crucial that we maintain and service these units on a regular basis. • Alternative Education Program / Choices Study the options for a permanent building for the Choices Academy program. 132
